Those Who Allow the Practice of Metziza’ B’Peh are Accountable for the Suffering of Herpes Infected Infants

Charedi Infant In Critical Condition After Contracting Herpes At His Bris

A three-week-old infant, born to a Charedi family in Haifa, was brought to the Bnei Zion medical center in Haifa in serious condition. It is believed that the infant contracted the Herpes virus during his Bris Milah. The infection caused serious contamination in the young boy’s brain that caused seizures. Lab results showed that the infant was suffering from herpes.

Head of the Pediatrics Department in Bnei Zion, Professor Yitzchak Serugo said: “The infant has been hospitalized in serious condition. It appears that he has a brain infection that is causing prolonged seizures and a serious infection of his skin.”

The baby was rushed to the hospital by his parents who noticed the infection a number of days after his bris. During his time in the pediatrics department, the herpes virus was discovered in his spinal fluid, his brain, and on the lesions on his skin. The infant seized for the first three days after being hospitalized in spite of receiving anti-seizure medication.

According to Professor Serugo, the infant is receiving anti-viral treatment to remove the virus from his brain but will have to undergo continuing treatments for the next six months in order to eradicate the disease completely.

March of 2013 – Mezizah B’Peh Ritual Linked to Learning Disabilities – STD’s and the Measles Vaccine Hypocrisy

This graph depicts the number of states that criminalize high risk STD behaviors

Metzizah B’Peh – a Dangerous Ritual With Potentially Life-Altering Consequences to Children – Well Documented in 2013, No Different than Spreading STD

Dear Readers:

On March 30, 2013, FailedMessiah reported on a potential link between learning disabilities in the Haredi community and the ritual of Metzizah B’Peh. He published a study conducted as well as noted a “cause and effect” between the ritual and increased birth defects noted by Rabbi Dr. Moshe Dovid Tendler of Yeshiva University several years before the 2013 article. Yet, the ritual continues. New York politicians have done nothing to criminalize what is, among other things, a risky practice performed on 8-day-old infants, likely pandering to those who financially support them. There is no legitimate basis in Judaism for the practice, if anything Pikuach Nefesh (the safety of the soul) should dictate quite the opposite.

And then there’s the measles hypocrisy.

In 2018/2019 when many of the Haredim were refusing to vaccinate children for measles, and numerous religious schools and yeshivas were unwilling to bow to the whims of legitimate vaccination concerns,  one of the many reasons given was a nonsense study which linked the measles vaccine to autism. Setting aside that the studies on that connection were debunked eons ago and ignoring the dangers that contracting the measles poses to immuno-suppressed individuals, rabbis were calling for civil disobedience on the subject. So, on one hand, they ignore medical wisdom and on the other, disavow it. Does this sound reasonable?

The same Haredim refusing to vaccinate for measles due to a farcical link between the vaccine and autism are many of the same parents who are allowing the Metzizah B’Peh ritual to be performed on their infant children, despite a very real and well-documented link between the procedure and Herpes Simplex Virus Type 1 and a potential link between HSV-1 and learning disabilities.

Multiple Babies Infected With Herpes From Ritual Circumcisions In Recent Months

At least four babies in NYC have been infected with herpes from mohels performing the metzitzah b’peh ritual since September 2019. According to a report from the CDC, three of those babies have been infected since December; all three have been admitted to the hospital and are reportedly recovering now. Herpes can cause severe infection in babies resulting in brain damage and death.

The “metzitzah b’peh” ritual is the circumcision practice in which a mohel sucks the blood from a freshly snipped foreskin of a baby boy. Outside of the ultra-Orthodox community, the ritual is shunned by Jews, and is considered by many to be an ancient tradition based on “a long-discredited medical theory from the Iron Age before the dawn of the Common Era.”
“Protecting the health and wellbeing of infants is always the city’s first priority,” said Department Of Health spokesperson Patrick Gallahue. “The spread of neonatal herpes through ritual circumcision is a public health risk. To address this risk, we will continue to work with providers and families across our city to keep our youngest New Yorkers safe.”

The DOH added they have started doing outreach to medical providers in the orthodox Jewish community on how to recognize the signs and symptoms of herpes in newborns, and warn families about the risks of this particular ritual. At least one of the babies recently diagnosed was not immediately hospitalized because health care providers did not recognize the signs of infection.

The Health Department also noted that there have been no reported cases of herpes from the ritual in the city since 2017, when it came out that at least six babies had been infected with herpes since Mayor de Blasio came into office. At the time, two of the six mohels who infected the babies were identified and ordered to stop performing the ritual. De Blasio acknowledged that the policy at the time was not working.

Under the Bloomberg administration, the Board of Health ruled that “parents need to be aware of the opinion of experts,” and introduced circumcision consent forms that required parents to sign a waiver before their infant could undergo the procedure. The city was immediately sued by ultra-Orthodox Jewish groups, who claimed their First Amendment rights were violated.

When he was first running for office, de Blasio criticized the Bloomberg administration for not doing enough community outreach, but stopped short of promising to dispose of the consent forms. His subsequent criticism of the consent forms helped him win over ultra-Orthodox Jewish voters and further distinguish himself from Bloomberg, saying, “I would start over and change the policy to find a way to protect all of our children but also respect religious tradition.” As Failed Messiah put it at the time, “Bill De Blasio Promises Satmar That In Exchange For Votes, He Will Repeal Informed Consent For Dangerous Haredi Circumcision Practice.”

City Flags Ultra-Orthodox Jewish Circumcision Ritual Following New Herpes Cases

Four recent cases of neonatal herpes infection following a Jewish circumcision ritual have health officials once again urging parents in New York City’s ultra-Orthodox population to avoid the practice or at least limit its risks.

Health officials on Sunday said there have been three cases of herpes simplex virus 1 infections in infant boys reported to the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene since Dec. 1, 2019. The fourth case was reported in September 2019.

4 NY babies get herpes from Jewish circumcision rite in past 6 months

The custom is rarely practiced outside the haredi, or ultra-Orthodox, community. Other mohels use a sterile pipette for the practice.

It has been a political football in New York City with its large haredi population. In February 2015, the city eliminated a parental consent form mandated by former mayor Michael Bloomberg. The form was replaced with an educational brochure in 2015.

Six families in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, had children contract herpes between 2015 and mid-2017 from metzitzah b’pehNone of the families would give the name of the mohel to the Health Department.

At least 11 boys contracted herpes from the practice between 2004 and 2011. Two died and two suffered brain damage.

Rabbi Hillel Handler, a Dangerous anti-vaxxer, pro-Metziza b’Peh, anti-Zionist, anti-Women, Pro-Sex-Abuse Cover-up Rabbi on Stage in Rockland

Brooklyn’s kooky anti-vaxxer rabbi is extremist on sex abuse, circumcision — even opposes Israel

Brooklyn’s kooky anti-vaxxer rabbi is extremist on sex abuse, circumcision — even opposes Israel

Rabbi Hillel Handler enjoyed a rare moment in the glare of mainstream media this week when he addressed an anti-vaccination crowd in a heavily Hasidic town in suburban Rockland County.

The member of the Satmar Hasidic sect riled up the crowd of a couple of hundreds of people with a diatribe that accused liberals in and out of government of using a still-spreading measles outbreak to target observant Jews.

Handler called Mayor de Blasio a “nasty German” and claimed it was “in his DNA” to hate Jews.

”Like the Fuhrer, he says: ‘Blame the Jews. They’re contaminating the whole city,’ ” Handler told the Daily News Wednesday.

De Blasio shot back that Handler was spouting “dangerous and irresponsible lies.”

“Rabbi Handler is putting at risk the lives he claims he’s trying to save,” said Miranda Marcy, a spokeswoman for the mayor.

At the rally in Monsey, Handler focused mostly on measles, although he did veer off into an anti-immigrant diatribe claiming that undocumented immigrants pose a more serious health threat.

Little did the crowd or the reporters covering the event know that Handler has a long history of supporting radical causes on the far right-wing fringes of Jewish opinion.

Handler has fiercely attacked observant Jews for reporting child sex abuse to police, claiming such accusations should be handled by rabbinic authorities. He once even defended a rabbi who was convicted of raping his own daughter, saying the girl was lying about the abuse.

Handler also opposed efforts to regulate metzizah b’pei, a controversial circumcision rite that health officials say can spread deadly herpes to newborn boys.

He even opposes Israel’s existence.

“There’s a lot of half-crazies like him in America,” said Alexander Rapaport, who runs a network of kosher soup kitchens and recently recorded a pro-vaccination public service video. “It’s the price of freedom in America.”

Rapaport, who happens to be a neighbor of Handler, shrugs him off as a phony who has no pulpit and no real following.

Others see him as a powerful danger in his ability to link different hateful causes. Shmarya Rosenberg spent several years chronicling abuse and corruption in the ultra-Orthodox world but has since left the blog called Failed Messiah.

“He’s an extremist, and he’s amoral,” said Shmarya Rosenberg. “He’s appears to be a gun for hire in the ultra-Orthodox community.”

Mohels Give Babies Herpes and Families Protect Them – Babies are the Collateral Damage of the Societal Norms

“FIRST DO NO HARM”

Primum non nocere is a Latin phrase that means “first, do no harm.” The phrase is sometimes recorded as primum nil nocere.[1]
Non-maleficence, which is derived from the maxim, is one of the principal precepts of bioethics that all healthcare students are taught in school and is a fundamental principle throughout the world. Another way to state it is that, “given an existing problem, it may be better not to do something, or even to do nothing, than to risk causing more harm than good.” It reminds the health care provider that they must consider the possible harm that any intervention might do. It is invoked when debating the use of an intervention that carries an obvious risk of harm but a less certain chance of benefit.[citation needed]
Non-maleficence is often contrasted with its corollary, beneficence.

Pikuach Nefesh (Hebrew: פיקוח נפש)

LM – 19.04.17

Jewish teachings demand that we travel on Shabbat and that we override nearly every other religious consideration when a person’s life is in danger. We are commanded to “lo ta’aseh” a Mitzvah when in so doing we would be putting a life in danger or failing to save one.

Is protecting a mohel who has permanently damaged and even killed babies not within this category? Are you not the putting the next child’s life in danger? Is it not a moral imperative of EVERY SINGLE JEW to make certain that mohels who are damaging children be stopped and be prosecuted for their crimes, crimes against Jewish babies, crimes against all Jews?

Whatever our beliefs are regarding the use or misuse of the word “me’tzizah,” should those very tenets of our religion not be trumped by the notion that we as Jews are religiously and morally obligated to protect our children?

To the parents who will not cooperate with the authorities, you are hypocrites. You are shameful. You do not deserve the blessings that are bestowed upon you in your ability to conceive and bring children into this world.

To the parents who will have babies harmed by these practices because your friends, family members, rabbis and communities did not warn you, did not protect you, it might be time to re-evaluate your belief system. May you and your babies not suffer the sins of your community.

To the Rabbis who are not cooperating with authorities and claiming that these rituals are complicated and holy, you are the unholiest of them all.

Circumcisions and Herpes – Metzizah b’peh Should Be Illegal, Mayor de Blasio

Herpes cases among babies linked to ultra-Orthodox Jewish circumcision ritual

New York health department alerts doctors to infections linked to ancient ritual in which circumcision wound is cleaned by mouth

meziza.2

A baby boy was rushed to hospital when he developed herpes following a controversial ancient circumcision ritual, it has been reported.

The New York health department alerted doctors to the case of a newborn who fell ill after undergoing the ultra-Orthodox Jewish practice in which the circumcision wound is cleaned by mouth.

A rash is said to have spread across the child’s genitals, buttocks, inner thighs and ankle two weeks after the procedure.

There have been six cases of herpes among children who have had the ritual known as metzitzah b’peh performed on them since February 2015, reported the New York Daily News.

The majority of Jewish circumcision ceremonies do not include metzitzah b’peh, in which the mohel, or circumciser, places their mouth directly on the wound to suck away the blood.

An estimated 3,000 babies are circumcised each year using the method in New York City, home to the largest Jewish population outside Israel.

The city’s mayor Bill de Blasio told reporters officials were in the process of identifying the mohel who had performed the procedure and expected “full cooperation from the community”.

Mr de Blasio retracted the requirement for a parental consent form for the practice two years ago in a compromise with ultra-Orthodox leaders who agreed to help identify and isolate any mohels found to be responsible for an infection.

Of the six previously undisclosed cases, two occurred last year and three in 2015.

Since 2000, there have been 24 cases of infant herpes linked to circumcision, leading to two deaths and two cases of brain damage, according to the New York Post.

Herpes, a highly contagious viral disease which can cause blisters and ulcers, is more severe in newborn babies as their immune systems are not fully developed.
