Israel: Police Announce Arrests In Money Laundering Operation

Three persons were arrested by Israel Police on Thursday, 8 Iyar as the primary suspects in a money laundering operation, including one chareidi suspect. Police report the operation involved millions of shekels and the suspects are residents of both Jerusalem and Netanya and they are in their thirties.

It appears that they obtained funds from abroad fraudulently and they laundered the money here in Israel. The operation has been going on for a number of years. During the predawn hours of Thursday however, the clandestine investigation went public as police moved in to make the arrests. Armed with search warrants, police carried out searches of their homes at the time of the arrests.

Le Pen, Diamonds, Lev Leviev, Berel Lazar, New York

Le Pen’s Trump Tower Italian Fundraiser Tied to Lega Nord-Russia; Are Diamonds Le Pen’s Best Friend?

Will France get an anti-American president, Marine Le Pen, who doesn’t even know that New York City is located there? Does she think that Trump Tower is in Montreal? “Vive le Quebec Libre! Vive le Canada Français et vive la France!” said De Gaulle on July 24, 1967 in Montreal:

And are diamonds Le Pen’s best friend, as once sang by another bleached blond? In “Gentlemen Prefer Blonds“-“Diamonds are a Girl’s Best Friends“, Marilyn Monroe sang that the French may be willing to die for love, but that she prefers diamonds. Link: And, love won’t pay for Marine Le Pen’s campaign, it seems. The French connection would’t do. She needed an Italian connection in Trump Tower.

Enter her Italian “fixer”, George “Guido” Lombardi, apparently Giorgio Guido Lombardi, who migrated from Italy to the US in the 1970s. Lombardi states in an interview at the beginning of the BBC Panorama documentary “Marine Le Pen: Who’s Funding France’s Far Right” ( ) that there were people at the cocktail-fundraiser, which he held for Marine Le Pen in Trump Tower, who could have contributed a million dollars “without blinking an eye“. Was one of them the “King of Diamonds?

According to the New York Post, long-time friend of Putin “Israeli diamond dealer Lev Leviev was the mysterious businessman hustled through the shut-down Lincoln Tunnel on behalf of a [New York Mayor] Bill de Blasio fundraiser. Did he help Marine Le Pen too?

According to the New York Times, “The political operative she [Marine Le Pen] went to meet at Trump Tower, George G. Lombardi, is a businessman who has made a career as a liaison between two right-wing Italian political parties — the Northern League and Forza Italia — and like-minded people in the United States. He has also worked with the National Front since 2012…” Pictures of Lombardi with former Senate majority leader Bob Dole, and former NY Republican Senator Alfonse D’Amato, as well as a younger Trump, are found on one of his web sites, they say: Recall:

In a more recent interview with the New York Times, Lombardi says that he was born in Geneva and moved to Rome, as a child, and that it was the 1968 protests, and popularity of communism at his university, that made him leave for America. He says that he started out in the jewelry business, then turned to real estate. He married the apparently older widow of real estate magnate Frank Lahainer, who already lived in Trump Tower, and was originally from Trieste, Italy, as was Frank Lahainer. Trieste faces Venice, on the Adriatic. See: “A Trump Tower Neighbor Is the Point Man for Europe’s Populists“. (Did the New York Times confuse Geneva with Genoa (Genova), or was he born in Switzerland?)

Although it was apparently bought by Frank Lahainer, the 25 carat diamond, mentioned in the 2002 Washington Post article, called up a memory about the sell-off of huge diamonds by Russia in the 1990s, after the collapse of the Soviet Union. Lev Leviev is believed to have helped liquidate these assets. Lev Leviev is also reportedly behind Putin’s Milan born Rabbi Berel Lazar (Lombardi’s dual compatriot: American-Italian)

Isn’t it bizarre that Putin’s official Rabbi Lazar was born in Milan, in Lombardy Italy, and ordained Rabbi in New York City? Lazar is a member of the Chabad Ludavitch sect, who have their own book, which is not used by mainstream Judaism. Lazar is reported as having both American and Russian citizenship and his wife as having American citizenship. They presumably have Israeli citizenship too. And, while Lazar has recently been quoted as saying that, if Le Pen wins, France’s Jews will have to leave France, we don’t know if he is playing at Briar Rabbit, nor if he thinks that a bad thing. (See JTA .org: “Russian chief rabbi says Jews should leave France if Marine Le Pen elected“, April 22, 2017) Lazar may want to bring the Jewish diaspora to Israel for the arrival of the Messiah. Another Putin friend-Russian Oligarch-Chabad supporter, Roman Abramovich, is currently building a new house in Israel. And, building lots of housing for the diaspora would be big business for real estate magnates. This could include Trump’s sons and son-in-law.

A Platinum Loan or a Nordlict Investment – the Yeshiva Business and WTA

This article should be viewed as a follow up to an article we published earlier in April regarding Westchester Torah Academy and alleged “Loans” from Mark Nordlicht to the Westchester Torah Academy.

We contend that the “Loans” were donations. Whether they began as a means of hiding money, a lot of it, and shielding Nordlicht from potential financial liability or evolved and have been converted is a question for debate. We have our theories.

We further posit that subject only to the previous paragraph, the “donations” are now being called back as “Loans” to give Nordlicht visible and “clean” (i.e. laundered) working capital to manage his current legal woes. Each and every dollar Nordlicht is referring to as “Loans” represents an injustice to the Westchester Torah Academy and all of its students and their families..

We finally maintain that if investigators want justice for those many, many people aggrieved by Platinums’ litany of carefully planned and executed swindles, they need to open Nordlicht’s personal financial statements and trusts, scrutinize the money, its providence and underlying transaction. Nordlicht’s (and Bodner’s) personal family trusts, which we believe are comprised of Platinums’ assets should unshieded  from creditors of Platinum and all of its many victims.

Lower-Tuition School Model Spawning Imitators

Impact of just-opened yeshiva being felt, but financial projections remain untested.

November 20, 2012, 12:00 am

Rabbi Netanel Gralla, head of Yeshivat He’Atid, has two things he wants everyone to know about his school.

First, teachers have not been replaced by computers. And second, while the tuition — $8,990 for kindergarten and first grade — is substantially lower than that of other area day schools, the students are hardly enduring a no-frills education.

“We have art, music and gym,” the 40-year-old father of seven points out to a visitor during a recent tour of the Bergenfield, N.J. elementary school. “We’re not cutting corners.”

With its dual approach of making Jewish education affordable and using “blended learning,” a mix of computerized and face-to-face instruction, He’Atid — the name means “Yeshiva of the Future” — has been open just two and a half months.

But already, the 116-student Orthodox school’s impact is being felt in the Jewish day school world; other Bergen County schools are lowering tuition in the younger grades and looking to incorporate more technology. Meanwhile, two new Orthodox schools following He’Atid’s model are on track to open next year: Westchester Torah Academy in New Rochelle and Tiferet Academy in Long Island’s Five Towns.

The two planned schools, along with He’Atid, have the financial backing of the New York-based Affordable Jewish Education (AJE), an ambitious nonprofit so new it is still awaiting 501(c)3 approval.

Established by 44-year-old hedge fund manager Mark Nordlicht (who, through an intermediary, declined to be interviewed) together with six anonymous donors, AJE’s goal is nothing less than solving the day school tuition crisis by creating a new breed of tech-savvy, lower-cost schools.

“This is an urgent problem, and we have a sense of urgency,” says Jeff Kiderman, AJE’s executive director. “We can’t take a wait-and-see approach; this is the time to act.”

The money from AJE is intended solely as a startup investment to get the schools “on their feet”; the goal is that eventually the schools will be financially self-sustaining.

“The point is not to redistribute who’s paying, but to change how much it actually costs,” says Kiderman.

The He’Atid approach, inspired in part by innovative charter schools like California’s RocketShip and Arizona’s Carpe Diem, is not without its critics. While it’s hard to object to lower tuition, some parents — and leaders of established day schools — are skeptical about blended learning, which has yet to be proven successful on a large scale or over the long term. Others wonder whether AJE and He’Atid’s budget projections are realistic — the school, currently spending over $11,000 per student, is supposed to break even financially in its third year — or if the model risks faltering as it expands (the target size is about 1,000 students in pre-K through eighth grade).

Not helping the matter is that He’Atid and AJE have refused to make public the details of the “model” they are using to project expenses, although they have revealed that cost savings will come from “efficiencies” like larger class sizes, fewer administrators and group purchasing.

“The ‘model’ is just our prediction of what we think will happen — what’s more important is what actually happens,” says Kiderman. “We are constantly tweaking the model as we learn more, and we are prepared to share it with any school who wishes to learn from it.

Says Gershon Distenfeld, He’Atid’s president: “We’re happy to go over it one on one, but with no context everything gets misinterpreted.”

The Department of Health Knows – And Despite Alerts – Nothing

DOH Letter

Sent: Wednesday, March 08, 2017 9:42 AM
Subject: NYC DOHMH Alert #4: New Case of Neonatal Herpes Infection Reported Following Ritual Jewish Circumcision
Dear Health Alert Network (HAN) Subscriber:
2017 ALERT # 4
New Case of Neonatal Herpes Infection Reported Following Ritual Jewish Circumcision
First Case Reported in New York City in 2017
Please Share this Alert with All Emergency Medicine, Pediatric, Pediatric Infectious
Disease, Dermatology, Obstetric, Infection Control, and Microbiology Laboratory Staff
• A new case of neonatal herpes following ritual Jewish circumcision has been reported to the New York City Health Department.
• When evaluating male infants with suggestive symptoms  in the weeks following out-of-hospital circumcision, providers should inquire whether direct orogenital suction (metzitzah b’peh) was performed during circumcision and consider infection with herpes simplex virus (HSV) or other oral pathogens.
• Infants suspected of having HSV infection should be hospitalized and treated with intravenous acyclovir.
• Please distribute the Health Department’s pamphlet “Make a Safe Bris for Your Baby” to expectant parents and/or new parents who visit your office or facility.   This is also available in poster format.
March 8, 2017
Direct orogenital suction (DOS) during ritual Jewish circumcision (also known as metzitzah b’peh) is a practice during which a mohel (religious circumciser) uses his mouth to suck blood away from the circumcision wound on the infant  penis.  DOS can transmit herpes simplex virus (HSV) to newborn males.
This is the first case of neonatal herpes following ritual Jewish circumcision, reported in New York City in 2017.  The infant was the full-term product of an unremarkable gestation and delivery.
He was circumcised by a mohel on the 8th day of life.  On day 15 of life he developed a rash on the genitals, buttocks, inner thigh, and ankle, which became vesicular by day 17 of life.  Vesicular culture grew HSV-1.  The infant was admitted to hospi tal for a full 14 day course of intravenous acyclovir.  His serum was negative for IgG antibody to herpes simplex virus types 1 and 2, and cerebrospinal fluid was HSV PCR negative.   The location of the lesions, timing of signs and symptoms (following ritual Jewish circumcision and within one incubation period for HSV-1), and laboratory identification of HSV-1 are consistent with transmission during DOS.
Most cases of neonatal herpes are acquired during delivery, when a neonate passes through the birth canal of a woman with genital herpes infection.  HSV infection after delivery is uncommon.
However, in NYC, a substantial proportion of male neonatal herpes cases are related to DOS, an entirely preventable cause of infection.
Since 2006, when neonatal herpes reporting became mandatory in NYC, there has been a total of 144 laboratory-confirmed neonatal herpes cases, including 10 in 2015, 17 in 2016, and 4 to date in 2017. Of the 82 m ale neonatal herpes cases since 2006 (HSV-1, HSV- 2, or untyped HSV), 18 (22%) followed ritual Jewish circumcision; when only HSV-1 cases are considered, 38% (16/42 male HSV-1 cases) followed ritual Jewish circumcision.
This alert describes the first laboratory-confirmed case of neonatal herpes infection following ritual Jewish circumcision reported in New York City in 2017.  In 2016 there were 2 such cases, and in 2015 there were 3 cases.  Since 2000, there has been a total of 24 laboratory-confirmed cases of HSV infection following ritual Jewish circumcision reported to the Health Department.  Two of the 24 infants died, and at least two others suffered brain damage.
The NYC Health Department  is working to educate parents about the risks of DOS. Parents who choose ritual Jewish circumcision for their son may not be aware that DOS will be performed or may not be aware of its potential risks.  In 2015, the Department distributed pamphlet s entitled “Make a Safe Bris for Your Baby” and companion posters to NYC health care providers, including obstetrician/gynecologists and pediatricians. Hospitals where infants with DOS-related neonatal herpes have been born or admitted were also asked to distribute the pamphlet to pregnant women admitted for labor and delivery, and to display the poster prominently in prenatal, and labor & delivery areas. Despite these efforts, parents of case-patients infected have not reported seeing the pamphlet or poster.
Obtaining copies of “Make a Safe Bris for Your Baby” pamphlet or poster Hospitals and healthcare providers should distribute “Make a Safe Bris for Your Baby” to expectant parents and/or new parents who visit your office or facility. To obtain hard copies of the pamphlet in English or Yiddish, or for copies of the companion poster, call 311. For electronic copies, please visit the Safe Bris webpage:
Diagnosis, Reporting, and Specimen Collection
For detailed guidance regarding diagnosis, reporting, specimen collection, and specimen shipping and handling, please refer to Health Alert #2 (January 28, 2014) at:
Key Points for Providers:
1. When evaluating male infants with suggestive symptoms  in the weeks following out-of-hospital circumcision, providers should inquire whether direct orogenital suction (metzitzah b’peh) was performed and consider infection with HSV or other oral pathogens.
2. Herpes-infected neonates may not present with the classic finding of grouped vesicular skin lesions and may be afebrile.
3. Babies suspected of having HSV infection should be immediately admitted to the hospital and treated presumptively with intravenous acyclovir.
4. Distribute the Health Department’s pamphlet “Make a Safe Bris for Your Baby,” to expectant parents and/or new parents who visit your office or facility.
4.  Health care providers diagnosing herpes infection in infants <60 days of age days are mandated to report the infection to the NYC Health Department  within 24 hours of diagnosis.
5.  Providers evaluating infants <60 days of age with suspected HSV infection are required by law to collect specimens from one or more vesicles (if present) or from any skin lesions suggestive ofherpetic disease, and to send these swab(s) to the New York State Wadsworth Center Laboratories for diagnostic testing using molecular methods.
Questions about the pamphlet may be directed to Dr. Diana Sanchez at (347) 396-7311. Questions about diagnosis, reporting, and specimen collection may be directed to Dr. Julia Schillinger at (347) 396-7296.

Rabbi charged with rape, sexual assault, sodomy against a minor

According to the indictment, Harrison, now 58, initiated direct contact with the complainant after he was her substitute teacher at Beit Shulamit in December 2009. In an indictment sheet of horrifying allegations, Rabbi David Harrison, who taught at the Beit Shulamit religious girls high school in Jerusalem, was charged with dozens of counts of rape, sodomy, sexual assault, assault and intimidation through threats against a former pupil, who was a minor at the time.

The complainant, a woman now aged 21, filed a charge of rape and other allegations against the rabbi at the beginning of the month claiming that they took place over a period of several months when she was 14.

Harrison has spent his career as a teacher and educator, and has also worked extensively performing wedding ceremonies for couples without a personal connection to a rabbi. Harrison began work at Beit Shulamit, in the Ramot neighborhood, as a part-time teacher in September 2007 but was fired in June 2010.

According to the indictment, Harrison, now 58, initiated direct contact with the complainant in December 2009, after he was her substitute teacher at Beit Shulamit.

A few days later, he met the pupil close to her classroom and asked her to accompany him to a staff room where he gave her worksheets to hand out to another class.

On this and several other occasions, Harrison allegedly touched the student on her hand, arm, stomach and chest, but apologized immediately for having touched her.

At a later stage, Harrison allegedly called the pupil to the same staff room used specifically by the rabbis of the school and which could be locked from the inside.

When she entered, Harrison allegedly locked the door behind her and told her to sit down, whereupon he took off his pants and underwear, and forced her to perform oral sex, while telling her that it was all right because he was a rabbi, that it was a secret between them and threatening to harm her if she told anyone.

In the next incident after this assault, Harrison allegedly met the girl at the entrance to the school and told her to come with him to a bomb shelter in the building, divided into two rooms. According to the indictment he pushed her into the inner room of the shelter, and told her to undress, slapping her in the face when he told her she was undressing too slowly.

He then hit her again, forced her to lie on a table in the room and then raped her. Afterwards he told her that she’d had fun, and that so had he, and that she had been a good girl. He again threatened to harm her and that he would tell everyone she was a prostitute if she spoke with anyone about what he had done.

According to the charge sheet, Harrison raped the girl between two and four times a week, including sodomy. On one occasion the day after he raped her, he forced her to swallow an emergency contraception or “morning after” pill.

During May 2010, the complainant was ill and was away from school. When she returned, Harrison allegedly ordered her to meet him in the shelter and scolded her for having been away without informing him.

He then allegedly ordered her to strip and beat her for several minutes, and then raped her once again.

The beatings occurred on other occasions as well, in which Harrison would kick the pupil, beat her with his belt, and in one incident threw a chair at her, bruising and scratching her.

Harrison would allegedly repeatedly threaten to harm her if she did not do as he instructed, and threatened to tell her parents and others that she had initiated sex with him and that they would believe him and not her because he was a rabbi.

He also threatened that he would have her expelled from school, that no other schools would accept her, and threatened to send other people to harm her and even kill her.

The state has requested that Harrison be incarcerated until the end of the legal proceedings against him.

The director of the Association of Rape Crisis Centers in Israel, Orit Sulitzeanu, described the allegations as “outrageous and terrifying” and said that such crimes required a severe punishment.

“This criminal exploitation by an educator and religious figure is unforgivable,” said Sulitzeanu.

“This incident demonstrates the urgent need to ensure that advisers are placed in all educational frameworks who will be able to identify and deal with sexual violence, and for pupils to attend workshops for the prevention of sexual violence.”

Harrison denies the allegations against him and says he does not even know the woman.

The Platinum Plethora of Indictments –

US charges hedge fund founder, others with $1 billion fraud

Top executives of New York-based hedge fund manager Platinum Partners were arrested on Monday and charged with running an approximately $1 billion fraud that federal prosecutors said became “like a Ponzi scheme” as its largest investments lost much of their value.

Platinum, led by Mark Nordlicht, for years was known for producing exceptionally high and consistent returns by taking an usually aggressive approach to investing and fund management, as outlined by a Reuters Special Report in April.

“As alleged, Nordlicht and his cohorts engaged in one of the largest and most brazen investment frauds perpetrated on the investing public,” Brooklyn-based U.S. Attorney Robert Capers said in a statement. The charges detailed schemes that included exaggerating the value of their investments, paying some clients ahead of others and rigging a bond vote in their favor.

Nordlicht, Platinum’s 48-year-old founding partner and chief investment officer, was arrested at his New Rochelle, New York, home on charges listed in an indictment filed in federal court in Brooklyn.

Others arrested included David Levy, 31, Platinum’s co-chief investment officer, and Uri Landesman, 55, the former president of the firm’s signature fund, said Federal Bureau of Investigation spokeswoman Adrienne Senatore.

Platinum is already liquidating its hedge funds, two of which have received bankruptcy protection. The firm and some of its executives also face lawsuits accusing them of stealing money or intellectual property from companies they invested in.

A fatal explosion on a Black Elk oil platform in the Gulf of Mexico, pictured here soon after the blast, helped push the company into bankruptcy, but not before major asset sales that benefited Platinum Partners ahead of creditors.

Sean Gardner | Reuters
A fatal explosion on a Black Elk oil platform in the Gulf of Mexico, pictured here soon after the blast, helped push the company into bankruptcy, but not before major asset sales that benefited Platinum Partners ahead of creditors.

The nearly 50-page indictment on Monday said that since 2012, Nordlicht, Levy and Landesman schemed to defraud investors by overvaluing illiquid assets held by its flagship Platinum Partners Value Arbitrage Fund LP, mostly energy-related investments hit by the dramatic decline in oil prices.

This caused a “severe liquidity crisis” that Platinum at first tried to remedy through high-interest loans between its funds before selectively paying some investors ahead of others, the indictment said.

Nordlicht, Levy and Jeffrey Shulse, former chief executive officer of Platinum’s majority-owned Black Elk Energy Offshore Operations, also defrauded the Texas energy company’s bondholders, the indictment said.

Black Elk is now defunct. A remaining litigation trust is attempting to claw back money from Platinum and its executives over a scheme, described in the U.S. Department of Justice charges on Monday and by Reuters in April, that used the Beechwood group of reinsurance companies to rig a bond vote and pay the hedge fund manager ahead of creditors.

A Platinum spokesman declined to comment. Nordlicht’s lawyer and a Beechwood spokesman did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Michael Sommer, Levy’s lawyer, said he looked forward to clearing his client’s “good name.”

Lawyers for Shulse and the other defendants could not be immediately identified.

Founded in 2003, Platinum until this year had more than $1.7 billion under management, the indictment said. The Value Arbitrage fund reported average returns of more than 17 percent from its inception, according to prosecutors.

But this year, a series of investigations tied to Platinum came to a head. This led the firm to hire an independent monitor in July to unwind its funds, and a Cayman Islands court in August placed its main offshore funds into liquidation.

Those moves came after the June arrest of Murray Huberfeld, a Platinum associate who prosecutors say was a founder, on charges in Manhattan federal court that he orchestrated a bribe to the head of the New York City prison guards’ union, Norman Seabrook, to secure a $20 million investment with the firm. Both have pleaded not guilty.

Two weeks later, the FBI and U.S. Postal Inspection Service raided Platinum’s Manhattan offices in a separate fraud investigation that culminated in Monday’s indictment.

Others indicted on Monday include Joseph Sanfilippo, Value Arbitrage’s former chief financial officer; Joseph Mann, a former Platinum marketing employee; and Daniel Small, a Platinum managing director.

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission said on Monday that it was seeking a court-appointed receiver for funds managed by Platinum Credit Management, the firm’s second-largest vehicle after Value Arbitrage.

The case is U.S. v. Nordlicht et al, U.S. District Court, Eastern District of New York, No. 16-cr-640.
