The Chabad Community – Australia -Human or Beast?

When physicality is misused or abused, the results are unbelievably powerful in the most negative of ways. To take advantage of another human being, to force oneself when unwanted, is the greatest and most intrusive violation. In this kind of situation, there is only one person who is the giver and the receiver. The abuser gives, but does so for his own satisfaction and enjoyment, therefore he or she is the only receiver as well. The person being taken advantage of is not a receptacle, is not part of this relationship, but has been turned into merely an object. Any time that both people are not consciously choosing and desiring this intimacy, and any time this intimacy is not an expression of love within the context of a marital union, the Torah is teaching us that the motivations are wrong and destructive. If the goal of the physicality is not to create an everlasting bond and representation of the love that is shared between the man and the woman, if it isn’t love expressed through physicality but rather love that is motivated by physicality, then it is a debasement, rather that a fulfillment, of our most G‑dly power.

The Torah’s views and safeguards against sexual abuse

STAND UP AND YELL!

CHABAD-LUBAVITCH COMMUNITY MEMBERS… PRACTICE WHAT YOU PREACH….

We are quite certain that when Sara Esther Crispe penned the article from which we took the above quote, she never imagined that it would be used as a source of inspiration for scathing criticism of the Chabad community. The article is eloquently written, the sentiments are ones we share. The passion of her words so undeniably sincere. That they are so antithetical to the realities from within the Chabad community is horribly unsettling and so very sad.

There are dozens of articles, lessons to be learned, from the chabad.org site from which we pulled Ms. Crispe’s post. The library on that site contains fundamental truths of values, the meaning of life, the duality of the soul, human nature versus G-d’s laws. We have studied these lessons. We have read the articles. We have listened to the speeches, the sermons of our rabbis. For many of us, we try to live our lives by the words written on that site… the written word.

So why on earth is the Chabad-Lubavitch community still SILENT ABOUT THE ABUSE FROM WITHIN ITS WALLS!!!

MS. CRISPE, GET UP AND SCREAM AS LOUD AS YOU CAN! TELL YOUR FRIENDS TO SCREAM. TELL YOUR RABBIS TO COME FORWARD. TEACH YOUR COMMUNITY THAT THIS IS NOT ABOUT WHAT IS SO ELOQUENTLY WRITTEN IT IS ABOUT LIVING BY THE WORDS YOU PENNED.

Is that fair of us to put the onus on Ms. Crispe? Perhaps not. But we think that if you are going to contemplate in such beautiful terms what you view as a reality, you must be willing to fight for the actualization of the reality of those values. We believe that if you are going to be a source of light for understanding human values, the difference between human and beast than for the grace of G-d, don’t sit quietly when there are beasts not humans in your midst.

A search of the term “sexual abuse” on the Chabad.org site leads to 40 results, 40. The number is not staggering nor is it surprising. What is utterly reprehensible is the level of hypocrisy those articles represent. They are the words of victims of sexual abuse. They are the views from the point of a child, a mother, a wife, a mother, a son. They are at the same time courageous as they are profoundly sad. That the Chabad-Lubavitch community could at the same time publish those victim accounts and fund the raving lawsuits of a rabbi who should have been defrocked long ago, is unthinkable.

WHY IS THE CHABAD-LUBAVITCH COMMUNITY IN SIDNEY AND MELBOURNE NOT CONVINCING THE RABBI WHO “DID NOT KNOW TOUCHING A BOY’S GENITALS WAS A CRIME” TO STOP THE MADNESS, TO GO AWAY, TO LEAVE THE COMMUNITY IN SILENCE?

Instead, someone is funding those lawsuits. A benefactor is paying for a person, who should have understood the laws of human beings at least as well as Ms. Crispe, to claim damages against those with the chutzpah to criticize him.

THE ENTIRE CHABAD COMMUNITY SHOULD BE CRITICIZING YOSEF FELDMAN. THE ENTIRE CHABAD COMMUNITY SHOULD BE CELEBRATING THE DEFENDANTS IN FELDMAN’S LAWSUITS FOR THEIR CONDEMNATION. IT BEHOOVES US AS HUMAN BEINGS, AS JEWS TO STAND UP AND STOP THE ABUSE, STOP THE FEAR, STOP THE USE OF THE TERM “MESIRA” AND CELEBRATE THOSE WILLING TO SHOW COURAGE.

The first 8 search results for “sexual abuse” on the Chabad.org site are listed below. The one that caught our attention for reasons of title alone was Miriam Karp’s blog. “Responding to Child Predators in the Jewish Community.” In it Ms. Karp quotes Rabbi Dratch.

“The biggest shanda is when the community covers up these problems. We are not judged by other Jewish communities or by the non-Jewish world by the incidents of abuse themselves. Unfortunately, they can happen. We are judged by the way we take responsibility for them.”

Presumably, Ms. Karp is quoting the same Rabbi Dratch whom www.protectjewishkids.com author’s Erik Aiken has condemned for his lack of intestinal fortitude when confronting child predators in his own community. The sincerity of Ms. Karp’s words, like those of Ms. Crispe, against the backdrop of the history of the Chabad communities of Melbourne and Sidney, Australia makes one wonder whether or not the entire website and everything on it is simply payment of lip service. Are the people, so outspoken on that site, willing to go head-to-head with the community they seem to love when confronted with allegations of abuse?

RABBI DRATCH, WHERE ARE YOU WHEN YOUR COMMUNITY IS RIFE WITH STORIES OF ABUSE? WHERE IS YOUR PUBLIC CONDEMNATION? WHERE IS YOUR SUPPORT OF THE VICTIMS? YOUR BEHAVIOR IS INDEED A SHANDA!!

The movie “Spotlight” is the accounting of the Boston Globe’s investigation into sexual abuse within the Catholic community in Boston. It mirrors, in nearly exact parallel terms, what is happening within the Jewish community worldwide.

TO THE WRITERS, BLOGGERS, RABBIS, ROYAL COMMISSION, LEADERS, VICTIMS, ACTIVISTS – IT IS UP TO YOU! GET UP AND YELL!!!! STOP THE ABUSE! STOP THE COVER-UPS!! INVITE THOSE OUTSPOKEN BACK INTO YOUR COMMUNITY AND CELEBRATE THEIR COURAGE!!!

SHOW YOU ARE HUMAN, NOT BEAST!

  1. @Jack. – I know there are good people in Chabad. But why do we not hear their voices condemning the behavior of these evil people? Silence equals consent.
Do you lose your job if you criticize one another? Your movement needs to wear WWSD (What would Schneerson Do?) bracelets. Or would Schneerson be the one kicking you out of Chabad if you raised your voice?

    • The OVERWHELMING percentage of Chabad Rabbis as Shluchim have no moral spine. Its unfortunate but true. Again, I am a Chabad Rabbi for over 30 years. They would not stand up for any position that could jeapordize their standing in the organization and certainly not take a stand that could jeapordize financial support. Whatever happened in Australia is but a small taste of how the organization operates world wide. I am prepared to challenge anyone with hard facts to support everything I just said.

Unfortunately as a Chabad Rabbi for over 30 years I can attest to this suggested explanation as the, on target, explanation. I wish there was some way to confront the ENTIRE movement on a more concrete manner to actually create a change within them. Besides what I have personally experienced and witnessed, it’s way worse than a shanda what the REAL inner true identity and/or character of this “movement.” is all about.

  3. Excellent article. But it appears that the overwhelming majority of certain (“religious”) communities don’t have the intellectual prowess to understand & internalise even this no-brainer. The sad alternative is that they do understand, but don’t have the moral prowess (ie are essentially immoral).

On a personal level, this is exactly why I left my “home” of 50 years, Chabad. While their hypocrisy is not unique in the Ultra-Orthodox world, the dissonance between their pluralist, modern PR message & their actions on the ground in this area is unforgivable & particularly dangerous.
